Against the backdrop of the devastating flash flood in Nepal, which has left hundreds dead and many more missing, the Dairy, Fisheries and Animal Resources Department of Bihar on Tuesday (September 1, 2026) issued a public advisory cautioning against the consumption of “unfamiliar and unusual” fish caught from the flood waters flowing into the State’s rivers from Nepal.

Foreign minister appeals for freezers to help preserve bodies. The Nepali foreign minister has asked for foreign support to help provide freezers to preserve the bodies of flooding victims while they try to locate their loved ones. Earlier during a news conference Shisir Khanal says that "hundreds of bodies have been found downstream". "There is a risk of fast decomposition because these bodies have been in water for a long time," he says, adding that Nepal has "very limited" space to keep bodies in a frozen state for a long time. He says he is seeking active support from foreign governments to find ways to help preserve the bodies.

 Nepal Flash Floods: Death Toll Reaches 579 as Fresh Deluge Threatens Region. The death toll from flash floods in central Nepal rose to 547 on Friday (August 28, 2026), with more bodies recovered as search and rescue operations continue with caution due to fear of fresh floods following an increase in the water level in the Bhotekoshi River area.  The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) said rising water levels at the site of a devastating flash flood earlier this week increased the risk of another flood in the area. “The water level mixed with mud has increased at the same place where the flash flood occurred on Wednesday, and there is a risk of more flooding in the area,” the NDRRMA said. -PTI

The northeastern region of India is a rich reservoir of indigenous agri-horticultural crops, and many of the crops have immense commercial potential. However, the region, despite its rich biodiversity, has not been able to take full advantage of GI tagging and shares only 17.18% of the total GI-tagged crops. All total 22 specialty crops of NE India, namely, 4 cereals (Chak-Hao, Chokuwa Rice, Boka Chaul and Joha Rice); 9 fruits (Arunachal Orange, Kachai Lemon, Kaji Nemu, Khasi Mandarin, Memong Narang, Naga Tree Tomato, Tamenglong Orange, Tezpur Litchi and Tripura Queen Pineapple); 7 spices (Assam Karbi Anglong Ginger, Dalle Khursani, Hathei Chilli, Mizo Chilli, Mizo Ginger, Naga Mircha and Sikkim Large Cardamom); 1 tea (Assam Orthodox) and 1 vegetable (Naga Cucumber) have been GI registered. Among these, 7 crops belong to Assam, 3 crops each belong to Manipur and Nagaland, 2 crops each belong to Meghalaya and Mizoram, and 1 crop each belongs to Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim and Tripura. PM SVANidhi Completes One Year of Restructuring: Expanding Credit, Digital Inclusion and Livelihoods Opportunities. Posted On: 27 AUG 2026 5:07PM by PIB Delhi   The Prime Minister Street Vendor’s AtmaNirbhar Nidhi (PM SVANidhi) Scheme, launched on 1 June 2020 to provide collateral-free working capital loans to urban street vendors, has completed one year of its restructured phase. Approved by the Union Cabinet on 27 August 2025, the lending under the restructured Scheme has been extended up to 31 March 2030, with an enhanced focus on formal credit, digital financial inclusion, social security, capacity building and entrepreneurship. It aims to benefit 1.15 crore street vendors, including 50 lakh new beneficiaries. During the first year post-restructuring, 21.86 lakh loans have been disbursed to 10.56 lakh new beneficiaries, amounting to ₹6,294 crore.
